Woven on pit looms, the authentic shawls are made with handspun country wool, which is coarse in texture. As the art developed to cater to commercial needs, a variety of blends have been introduced that offer softer and easier-to-maintain versions. Those blended with tussar (moth) silk are extremely popular for their refined, regal look.

Steeped in history, the Chakesang Naga shawls truly honour the warrior and carry with them stories of the fierce and proud Nagas. Each shawl holds a special significance in the Naga culture. The community is now engaged in weaving shawls to generate income, and give others a chance to own something special. Owing to their size, Naga shawls are often purchased as blankets or throws by customers.
