Badawī Handcarved Box by Studio Inaãra

This exquisite hand-carved box in mango wood was crafted at Studio Inaãra, drawing inspiration from the traditional Bedouin way of life (Badawī in Arabic, meaning Desert Dwellers). Part of our Zubarah Heritage collection, it depicts Qatari culture through Indian craftsmanship, highlighting the importance of the Badawī (the desert dwellers) who relied on camels as their main mode of transport in the harsh desert climate. The intricate designs and motifs surrounding the camel draw inspiration from Al-Sadu, an ancient Bedouin weaving technique that holds significant cultural value in Qatar and the Gulf Region.

Fijiri Handcarved Box by Studio Inaãra
Fijiri serves as our tribute to Qatar's pearl diving legacy. The Firiji songs, sung by boatmen guiding divers to the sea, featured rhythms and melodies tailored to their work pace, facilitating synchronization and efficient breathing underwater. Passed down through generations, these songs were intrinsic to Qatar's pearl diving communities' cultural heritage.

The work of pearl divers was rigorous and perilous. Equipped with minimal diving gear, often just a nose clip and weighted rope, they plunged into the sea, relying on their breath-holding abilities to collect oysters from the ocean floor. These divers were renowned for their remarkable free-diving skills, reaching depths of up to 30 meters or more without the aid of modern scuba equipment. Revered for their bravery, expertise, and resilience amidst the sea's perils, they epitomized the essence of Qatar's maritime tradition.

For this beautiful hand carved box, we drew inspiration from one of Qatar's oldest symbols—the Pearl Monument—erected to honor this rich heritage. Our design incorporate elements symbolizing the dhow boat and the perils of the sea encountered by these brave men while diving in the Arabian Gulf

Saqr Handcarved Box by Studio Inaãra
With this beautiful piece of hand-carved finesse, we celebrate yet another significant aspect of Qatar's culture. Falconry, deeply intertwined with Bedouin traditions and the way of life in Qatar, holds a profound significance.

Falconry wasn't merely a means of hunting for the Bedouins; it was a cherished cultural tradition that played a central role in their lives. Falcons were highly prized and revered, symbolizing nobility, strength, and freedom. The practice of falconry was passed down through generations, with knowledge and skills carefully transmitted within families. Bedouin falconers, known as "muqābil al-saqr" (مقابل الصقر), developed close bonds with their birds, employing intricate training techniques passed down through generations to hone their falcons' hunting abilities.

Falcons are more than mere birds of prey; they represent dignity, valor, and pride in Qatar. To delve deeper into the rich history of falconry in Qatar, one can visit the Falcon Souq & Hospital located in Souq Waqif. Here, visitors can explore exhibits, learn about traditional falconry practices, and witness firsthand the cultural significance of falconry in Qatari society.
